Volleyball Home Opener

By Heather Kasten | Aug 29, 2025 9:02 AM

The Lady Warriors had their home opener last night against the North White Vikings. What started off a bit shaky, ended in a strong two set win for the Junior Varsity with both sets ending 25-23, putting new Coach Madison Budka's team with a 1-2 record. Winamac's varsity faced a tough North White front line, led by Valdizon with 10 kills and followed by Dahlenburg with 8. The Warriors battled back after a slow start, but dropped set one 16-25. Winamac showed strong promise in set two, leading in the first 12 points of the match, but fell short at 16-25 again after another serve-receive rut. Disheartened, Winamac dropped set three 11-25. While the outcome wasn't what they hoped, there were still some glimmers of the Warriors strong suits. Freshman Abby Keller had a career high 16 assists, while Grace Roth led the offense with 6 kills and the defense with 6 digs. Brooke Rausch followed with 4 kills and 4 digs. Serving took a turn for the better for the Warriors, with 4 aces for the night and 4/6 servers having a 100% serving percentage. When asked for thoughts on the match, Coach Kasten quoted, "We're looking for little wins right now, like increased serving percentage, less serve-receive errors and improving our hitter-setter connection in game situations. I feel like we did that tonight. Defense coverage is off the charts, as well as communication as to what it has been. Our first point opportunity, especially off of serve-receive or free balls, has to start taking priority, though. Not being able to convert points on easy tips and free passes isn't going to cut it against these big guns."
