The Lady Warriors traveled cross-county Tuesday night to take on the West Central Trojans and to start a new tradition with The Tomahawk for girls volleyball and basketball. The Junior Varsity started out strong and were able to pull out their first win of the season with a two set victory over the Trojans (25-19, 25-22). Newcomer Jocelyn Kain, sophomore setter, had three kills, four digs, two aces and four assists. Jordyn Hounchell, Lila Lavender and Alia Gourley each added three kills apiece while Gourley had 4 digs and an ace as well. Jaelyn Huddleston contributed with 5 assists and Kallie Kasten dished out 3 digs and 2 kills. The Winamac Varsity struggled to get their footing in the first two sets, falling 23-25 and 10-25, but set three proved to be a different group of girls. Some substitutions behind the serving line helped the Lady Warriors string some much needed points together, as well as a mental attitude check. This led to the Warriors to victory in set three, winning 24-23. Set 4 started out well, but a string of good serves from the Trojans led to the Warriors taking a loss with the fourth set ending 15-25. "We get so stuck in our heads sometimes, it just weighs us down and we can't move forward," commented Coach Kasten. "When we shake off our mistakes and stay in the right mindset, we do the right things - get our serve over and in, communicate, swing hard and earn points." Brooke Rausch stood out for the Warriors with 12 kills and 3 aces. Maggie Keller and Grace Roth both added 12 digs apiece while Linzy Walters had 28 assists.
