Maggie Smith will continue her outstanding academic and athletic career 4 more years while playing D1 cross country and track at the University of Southern Indiana What made you choose Southern Indiana? "The coach, he made it clear he would make me a better athlete and the team had a lot of good chemistry." What is your favorite memory of playing sports while participating as a student-athlete at Winamac? "The bonds that I created with coaches and teammates." Was playing a collegiate sport something that you always wanted to do? "Yes, I originally thought I wanted to play softball in college but as I got older I realized that I really liked running and I wanted to see what I could do at the collegiate level." At USI, you are going to be on both the cross country and track teams, when did you realize playing two sports in college could be a possibility? "Senior year when my coaches really pushed me and showed me that I could do more than I thought." Who were people along the way that helped you achieve this goal? "My parents, all of my coaches, and my teammates." What would you say to Winamac students who are on the fence about wanting to run cross country and track? "I would say give it a chance because even if running is something you don't think you're good at or don't like you might find that you have a love for it and you will have some good experiences along the way."
