The competitive spirit of the Winamac Community High School track and field was on full display Tuesday at the 2026 Portage Girls IHSAA Regional. Among the top performers representing the Warriors were Avery Wegner and Sadie Popejoy, both of whom held their own against elite competition from across the region in a night that balanced a final farewell with a look toward the future. Wegner Races to Top-Ten Finish in 800m In the Women’s 800 Meters, Avery Wegner delivered a gritty and determined performance in what was a high-stakes final. Wegner crossed the finish line with a time of 2:26.14, securing an impressive 7th place finish overall and adding two points to the team total. This race marked a poignant moment for the program, as it served as the regional swan song for Wegner. As a senior, Avery has been a cornerstone of the Warriors' middle-distance squad, providing leadership and consistent scoring throughout her high school career. Her ability to navigate a fast-paced field and finish among the top ten in the region is a fitting tribute to her dedication to the sport. While her presence on the track will be deeply missed next season, she leaves behind a legacy of hard work for the younger runners to emulate. Popejoy Shows Strength in Discus On the field side, Sadie Popejoy represented Winamac in the Women’s Discus. Competing in a field of heavy hitters, Popejoy launched a mark of 99' 4", earning her a 9th place finish overall. Popejoy’s performance was particularly notable in Flight 1, where she placed 3rd. While finishing just one spot shy of the podium in a regional meet is a tough result, the future remains incredibly bright for the Winamac thrower. As a junior, Sadie will be back in the circle next year. With another year of strength training and technique refinement ahead of her, she is poised to be a dominant force and a top contender for a state berth in 2027. A Program on the Rise The performances of Wegner and Popejoy at the Portage Regional highlight the talent brewing at Winamac Community High School. Facing off against powerhouse programs from across Northwest Indiana, the duo proved that the Warriors belong on the big stage. As the team bids a fond farewell to Wegner and her senior classmates, the focus shifts to the returning core. With athletes like Popejoy returning for their senior campaigns, the Winamac track and field program is well-positioned to keep making noise in the IHSAA postseason.
