Wegner and Popejoy Advance to Regionals

The Winamac Community High School girls track and field team delivered a series of strong performances at the IHSAA Sectional hosted by Kankakee Valley on May 19, 2026. The team’s efforts were highlighted by two regional qualifiers, multiple scoring performances, and a school record. Wegner and Popejoy Advance to Regionals. Senior Avery Wegner secured her spot at the regional championships with a third-place finish in the 800-meter run, setting a new school record with a time of 2:23.57. Wegner also earned a fourth-place finish in the 1600-meter run, clocking in at 5:36.35. Junior Sadie Popejoy will join Wegner at regionals after capturing third place in the discus throw with a toss of 100-04. Popejoy also demonstrated her speed on the track, finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 27.65 seconds. Distance and Relay Standouts The Warriors showed great endurance in the longest events of the evening: 3200-Meter Relay (4x800): The team of Kandace Kroft, Maci Earp, Madelyn Goodman, and Avery Wegner finished in 7th place with a time of 12:51.29 to score for Winamac. 3200-Meter Run: Roni Garbison and Micaela Godina both represented the Warriors, putting in strong individual efforts in the eight-lap race. 1600-Meter Run: Roni Garbison also competed in the mile, finishing with a time of 6:59.75. Field Event Highlights Winamac was well-represented in the field, with several athletes competing across various disciplines: Kandace Kroft (Sr): Tied for 5th place in the high jump, clearing 4-08.00. She also competed in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 57.00 seconds. Alia Gourley (So): Recorded a distance of 60-00 in the discus throw, finishing 19th overall. Lillian Dell (Fr): Placed 17th in the shot put with a throw of 24-00.00. Alison Vides (Sr): Competed in the shot put, finishing with a mark of 19-10.00. Addison Redweik (Fr): Represented the Warriors in the high jump competition. Sprints and Hurdles Katelyn Burgess (Fr): Competed in the preliminaries for both the 100-meter dash (14.02) and the 200-meter dash (28.99). Madelyn Goodman (Sr): Took 14th place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:11.70. Jordyn Hounchell (Jr): Represented Winamac in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 1:12.18.
