Winamac Girls 3rd at HNAC Meet CULVER, IN — The Winamac Community High School girls track and field team put together a stellar, complete-roster performance at the HNAC Meet on Tuesday. From historic individual sweeps to gritty performances in the trenches, the Warriors made their presence felt across every discipline. The Double Sweeps The story of the meet was the unstoppable duo of Sadie Popejoy and Avery Wegner, who accounted for six individual HNAC championships. Popejoy put on an absolute clinic in the sprints. She blew past the competition to win the 100-meter dash (13.33), captured the 200-meter dash title (27.80), and showcased her speed endurance by winning the 400-meter dash (1:03.70). Not content to just dominate the track, Popejoy also stepped into the throwing ring and secured a second place medal in the discus with a massive toss of 101 feet, 0.5 inches. While Popejoy commanded the sprints, Wegner was the undisputed queen of the distance runs. She pulled off an incredible endurance sweep, outlasting the field in the 800-meter run (2:41.10), maintaining a relentless pace to win the 1600-meter run (6:02.34), and capping off a marathon day by taking top spot in the 3200-meter run (13:29.48). Sprints, Hurdles, and Jumps Beyond the headliners, the Warriors saw crucial efforts across the track and field. In the jumps, Mylie Foster scored valuable points with a fifth-place leap in the long jump (13-6), while teammate Madelyn Goodman was right behind her, taking ninth in a competitive field with a jump of 12-7.5. The hurdles and vault saw great effort as well. Addison Redweik represented the Warriors in the 100-meter hurdles (11th, 22.24) and the high jump (13th, 4-2). Jordyn Hounchell also took on a tough double, competing in the 100-meter hurdles (13th, 23.90) and clearing 6 feet to place ninth in the pole vault. Distance and Throws Depth In the distance events, Roni Garbison showed incredible stamina. She earned a team point with an eighth-place finish in the grueling 3200-meter run (16:24.47), and also toiled through the 800-meter run (15th, 3:21.56) and the 1600-meter run (11th, 7:11.17). In the throwing pits, Lillian Dell and Alia Gourley threw hard for Winamac. Dell took 12th in the shot put with a solid mark of 23 feet, 11 inches. Gourley doubled up on the throws, placing 15th in the discus (57-6) and 16th in the shot put (19-3). Relay Power The Warriors’ relay squads proved that teamwork pays off.
