Winamac Girls Claim Team Title in Season Opener

The Winamac girls track team turned in a strong, balanced performance Tuesday night to win a three-way meet, scoring 65 points to hold off West Central (60) and North Judson (35). The Lady Warriors used depth across distance, sprints, hurdles, and throws to secure the team victory on their home track. Top Scorer Avery Wegner led the way with a dominant night, scoring 16.25 points. Wegner swept the distance events, winning the 400m, 1600m, and 3200m, and also contributed on the winning 4x800 relay team. First Place Finishers Winamac picked up key wins across multiple areas: Avery Wegner – 400m (1:06.61), 1600m (6:28.96), 3200m (14:17.58) Kandace Kroft – 800m (2:53.82), tied for 1st in high jump (4'8") Sadie Popejoy – Discus (95'8") 4x800 Relay (Wegner, Kroft, Maci Earp, Madelyn Goodman) The distance group set the tone early, accounting for multiple wins and a major share of the team’s scoring. Second Place Finishers Winamac added valuable points with several runner-up finishes: Sadie Popejoy – 100m (13.43), 200m (28.74), Shot Put (27'0") Katelyn Burgess – 300m Hurdles (58.13) Popejoy’s versatility stood out, contributing across both sprinting and field events. Third Place Finishers Additional scoring depth came from third-place performances: Roni Garbison – 1600m (7:37.16), 3200m (16:48.86) Maci Earp – 800m (3:04) Madelyn Goodman – 400m (1:15.19) Addison Redweik – 100m Hurdles (22.20) Mylie Foster – Long Jump (12'6") Team Recap Winamac’s success came from a well-rounded team effort, with athletes scoring in nearly every event group. The Lady Warriors were especially strong in the distance races and throws, while also picking up key points in hurdles and relays. In addition, several new additions to the team stepped up in key moments, contributing valuable points and adding depth across the lineup. With standout performances from Wegner, Kroft and Popejoy and contributions throughout the roster, Winamac showed the depth needed to win close meets and positioned themselves well for the rest of the season.
