Warriors Kick-off Conference at Culver

By Heather Kasten | Aug 30, 2023 7:08 AM

The Warriors fell to the Cavaliers in their first conference match of the season last night, but not without a fight. The Warriors came out strong, rattling Culver and forcing them to use both time outs in order to slow down Winamac. The strategy worked, but Winamac came back out and led the first half of set two with several ties along the way. Warriors and Cavs were points for point at 13-13, when Culver outside hitter Brynn Berendt took control of their serving game, rattling off 6 in a row to put the Warriors down 19-13. An unforced error on Culver's part let the Warriors creep back in the game, finishing with a long rally and lots of hustle at 21-25. Set three proved a little tougher, and ended the Warriors first conference match of the season with an 0-3 loss, but there were a lot of positives to take away. "We worked so hard yesterday on cleaning up our block and our timing at practice, which definitely paid off. We had more touches and blocks tonight in 3 sets than we had all day Saturday in 3 matches. It was disappointing to see set three go downhill like it did, but we have a lot of girls playing all the way around every set, every match. We're going to hit conditioning harder and get ourselves where we need to be with our stamina so we can focus on better execution of game strategy," quotes Coach Kasten. The night ended with 4 digs a piece from Kaelyn O'Connor, Piper Link and Maggie Keller. Raegan Kasten added another 5 digs, while Brooke Rausch and Marissa Iverson tacked on 6 and 5 kills, respectively, as well as 2 blocks a piece. Linzy Walters and Ally Campbell had 5 digs on the night with Walters dishing out 15 assists. The Warriors continue their conference schedule tomorrow at Knox.
